Genesis 14 “Faith in Action”

Sermon preached by Pastor Joshua Hall at Sparta Reformed Presbyterian Church during the morning service on December 16th, 2018.

Introduction

In this chapter, we will read about an extraordinary act of faith on the part of Abram. Four mighty kings conquer 6 tribes and then defeat 5 weaker kings, demonstrating that they are a mighty military coalition. They have come from all over the middle east for this battle. Their one mistake was taking Lot in the plunder, and so involving the servant of the Lord, Abram, Lot’s uncle. Abram is not a king, nor is his tribe very big, but he does a brave thing in this text and God blesses him.

Sinful Tendency: We sometimes look for supernatural means of help and neglect the natural means God has given us because we lack faith in God’s Word and blessings. We fail to act because we are afraid of failing. We say we have faith in God, but take no risks for God because we actually have no faith in Him.

Outline

First Point: Since God uses His church to bless others, we must walk faithfully with God among His people.

Second Point: Since God uses His church to bless others, we must fight for the oppressed.

Third Point: Since God uses His church to bless others, we must honor the Lord in our victories.

Christ Focus: Christ is the chosen one who fought for us. He rescued us when we were like Lot, and in Christ, we now have the blessings of Abram. We have been blessed to be a blessing.
