Exodus 3:14 God’s Incommunicable Attributes

Lecture by Pastor Joshua Hall at Sparta Reformed Presbyterian Church on January 20th, 2019.

Who is God? What is He like? Is he just a bigger, stronger version of a very good person? Is He mostly a loving God with a reluctance to condemn the wicked? Does God change His mind? We will explore these questions and more in this message on God’s attributes.

Exodus 3:14 “God said to Moses, “I am who I am.” And he said, “Say this to the people of Israel: ‘I am has sent me to you.’”

Sinful Tendency: We may wrongly assume that since we are made in the image of God, God is just a bigger version of us.

Gospel Truth: God’s attributes of simplicity, aseity, immutability and impassibility, eternity and omnipresence are incommunicable attributes. That is, they make God, God, and not us!

God’s Incommunicable Attributes

  1. Definition: Those attributes of God which are not communicated (reflected) in mankind.
  2. Simplicity
  3. Aseity
  4. Immutability and Impassibility
    1. Does God change His mind?
  5. Eternity and Omnipresence
