About this time every year pastors challenge their congregations to count their blessings. After all, the month of November is all about Thanksgiving, right? But when we hear something repeated over and over again, we tend to tune it out. We think we already know about giving thanks, so we check that topic off on our mental to do list, never paying attention to whether we are truly being thankful.
But in order to receive the true blessings which come to those who are thankful, we must not merely know about being thankful, we must actually be thankful. Philippians 4:6-7 says, “do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.”
We all want peace. None of us wants to be anxious. God’s plan for turning our anxiety into peace is for us to give our concerns to the Lord in prayer with thanksgiving. So today, if you feel anxious, try giving your anxieties to God with thanksgiving and see if He doesn’t fill you with peace.
