Every year we celebrate Christmas. Family, decorations, food, concerts, advent candles, carols, cards, gifts, and sweets abound. And every year our pastors remind us not to leave Christ out of Christmas, not to forget that He is the great Christmas gift. The coming of Christ is the single most important event in history. As school teachers often point out, history is important because it tells us who we are and informs the way we live. The coming of Christ is no different.
Why does it matter that Christ came? And how should we then live? The coming of Christ proved that God loves us and desires a relationship with us. God loved us so much that he became a mere man, in the person of Jesus Christ, that we might know him. Jesus came to bring peace on earth, peace between God and us. Are those of us who have received him as our Savior and King now live in relationship with him. “We love because he first loved us.” I John 4:19 ESV
