Remember Series; “Jehovah Sabaoth” The Lord is Peace; Psalm 24

A devotional by Pastor Joshua Hall; Faith Presbyterian Church, Quincy, IL; May 21, 2020.

Good Morning, Brothers and Sister!

Today we wrap up our series on God’s faithfulness. God has always been faithful to his people and he will be faithful to you and to me!

God is “Jehovah Sabaoth” or “Elohim Sabaoth”, “the Lord of Hosts” or “the Lord of Powers”. “Jehovah” means the God who is, the existing one, the one who reveals himself unceasingly. “Sabaoth” means armies or hosts. “Jehovah Sabaoth” then means that God who is and who reveals himself as ruler over all the universe. He reigns over the heavens and the earth!

This name of God in all its variants appears about 285 times in the Bible. It appears in Psalm 24:10. Let us worship our great God together and stand in awe of him as I read Psalm 24 in the English Standard Version:

“The earth is the Lord’s and the fullness thereof, the world and those who dwell therein, for he has founded it upon the seas and established it upon the rivers. Who shall ascend the hill of the Lord? And who shall stand in his holy place? He who has clean hands and a pure heart, who does not lift up his soul to what is false and does not swear deceitfully. He will receive blessing from the Lord and righteousness from the God of his salvation. Such is the generation of those who seek him, who seek the face of the God of Jacob. Selah Lift up your heads, O gates! And be lifted up, O ancient doors, that the King of glory may come in. Who is this King of glory? The Lord, strong and mighty, the Lord, mighty in battle! Lift up your heads, O gates! And lift them up, O ancient doors, that the King of glory may come in. Who is this King of glory? The Lord of hosts, he is the King of glory! Selah”

This is the Word of God. Let us pray.

God is Jehovah Sabaoth, the Lord of hosts! You and I dwell on this earth for a few short years. We are not so very important in the grand scheme of things, you and me. In a thousand years, Donald Trump will be forgotten, all his wealth and fame will disappear. It won’t take that long for you and me to be forgotten. I know very little about my great grandparents, and nothing at all about their parents.

But the Lord will never be forgotten. He is the creator of the universe! He is the Lord of hosts, God over all! And he will never forget you or me! Think about that for a moment. He is the great one, the one worthy of worship and honor, and he continues to show himself to us that we may stand in awe of him and worship him. He is worthy!

Beloved, some of the names of God bring us comfort because they show how God loves and cares for us. This name of God brings us comfort because we know that while we are small and seemingly insignificant, our God is eternal. Nothing we do on this earth will matter much in a few hundred years, except what we do in worship of Almighty God! We were made for worship, made to sing God’s praises, made to adore him! Let us stand-in awe of our great God today, let us worship and praise him!

If you are born again, you have the Holy Spirit dwelling within you. And in your heart you rejoice when you consider the greatness of God! For the Holy Spirit cries “abba, father” in the hearts of God’s children. Today, if you know him, rejoice in him and worship him! Let God be praised!

Let us pray! Amen!
